In 2021 Custom Flash Drives are still incredibly popular! Here’s why!
It may seem counter intuitive that in the age of cloud based memory services such as Google drive, that businesses are still purchasing custom shaped flash drives.
A couple years ago the “wags and mavens” of the promotional product industry were predicting the death of the flash drive, but it did not happen. Here’s why we think the trend reversed.
Cheaper memory prices.
When I first started buying and selling memory drives in 2005 the cost to me for an 8 GB was about $25 USD each. Now that same drive costs way less than $5. The same decline in prices are attributed to all other memory sizes from 4 GB and up. In those sizes the price decline has been precipitous.
Custom shaped USB sales increase while stock flash drive designs decrease in sales.
Stock designs still outsell the custom shapes by shear numbers but by percentage of sales the custom shaped flash drive sales have risen by over 82% worldwide while stock designs have declined by 37% across the board.
Custom shaped flash drives are so amazingly creative that even if a recipient of a custom flash drive is not always going to use a drive (instead using Google Drive ) when they do use a flash drive they will always use the custom shaped one. It’s a conversation starter, its a position piece and perhaps more than anything, they are cool.
How to make a custom shaped flash drive.
If you are considering the idea of turning your product, idea or business logo into a custom shaped flash drive here are a few ideas to consider.
A Submarine or a tennis ball?
If your product, idea or business logo is long and thinner such as a submarine, that is a great shape to make a custom 3D flash drive. The internal parts of the USB memory are about 2 inches long, 3/4 of an inch wide and a 1/4 inch thick. This means that the custom shape must contain these parts. Any idea such as a car, submarine, water bottle, fork, fish, truck, ambulance, phone, person etc are the right shape for a cool custom flash drive.
On the other hand anything round or globe-like such as a tennis ball sucks to make a 3D flash drive. The short reason is simple, it is physically too big. Would you want a 2 inch round rubber globe flash drive? No.

NEW promotional product ideas from China…
I just flew in from China and boy are my arms tired!
I want to reconnect as I have been in China over the last 10 days visiting 7 different factories and attending 2 major trade shows in China. I want to let you in on what’s new and what’s happening in the world of promotional products. Or as I like to say… Welcome to China!
We go to China so you don’t have to!
Maybe you think you want to go to China to find the latest and greatest in factory direct promotional swag for your clients? However, as I come to the end of my 30th or so trip to the Middle Kingdom, I would like to reflect on what it takes to really do China properly and how tough it is doing business with a country the same size as the USA and with 6 times the population!
Aside from the problems in dealing with a population of over 100 million crammed into an area the size of Florida (the cities of Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Guangzhou), there are a huge number of oddities unique to China to deal with. On this trip, the funniest one I came across was on a taxi trip.
In China a bad YELP review can cost you your life!
I was in a taxi in Shenzhen when the driver got a phone call. He pulled to a complete stop in the middle of 10 lanes of traffic and got out of the car to talk/yell on the phone for 8 minutes. Turns out the previous customer had forgotten his jacket in the cab and was threatening to leave a bad YELP review (Chinese Yelp) and in China a bad review will put you out of business (apparently).
After 8 minutes of the driver dodging traffic and yelling at the previous customer someone ran up to the taxi (the previous customer) and retrieved the jacket. The driver then got back in and off we went. Welcome to China.
The first new idea we came across is….
The reason I go to China as often as I do is to find new factory direct promotional ideas. I do this in a number of ways.
First, I walk two huge trade shows, one in Hong Kong and one in Shenzhen. Each day I walked just under 9 miles (as witnessed by my phone app).
I also visit a bunch of factories looking for ideas that no one else has. My goal is simple: find eye-catching products that are logo-viable.
The coolest new idea I saw is a collection of toasters and waffle irons that not only have the clients logo on them but can toast the logo onto the bread. These are very, very cool!
The second coolest new idea is….
Generally speaking, we don’t do bags. I usually find them way too boring and less than innovative. In my world I see many bag examples with crappy hardware, zippers and fabrics – all designed to come in at a price point that makes it “bound to fail”.
However, this collection of backpacks was so awesome we just had to get them into the line-up. What do you think? Email me and let me know!
The Art of the Deal… Chinese style!
The Trumpster has nothing on the Chinese. In fact, negotiating with the Chinese can either lead you to pull out your hair or capitulate to the deal. The following video snippet is of my factory manager and a new supplier haggling over the price and delivery of a new item.
This stellar deal making went on for about 25 minutes. In the end the price changed 4 cents! A win by Chinese standards!
Cool new idea #3 is…
The Sip Flip is a collection of folding and collapsible silicone water bottles, cups and coffee mugs. I LOVE this idea as it is eco-friendly, reusable and very eye-catching.
Breakfast…the most important meal of the day, except in China!
I am sure we all can agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I love a great cup or four of coffee accompanied by a steaming bowl of oatmeal, fruit salad or perhaps a nice muffin, hot out of the oven. If this is your idea of a great way to start the day, then you are out of luck when visiting China.
China, world-renowned for great cuisine has somehow missed the boat when it comes to breakfast.
The most popular breakfast dish in China is this awful combination of chicken broth, macaroni noodles and sliced process ham. Yum… (uggh).
It was SO BAD I went to McDonalds!
The ‘western-style breakfast’ in China is so bad I actually went to McDonalds! Now you would think that a McDonalds here or a McDonalds there would all be the same wouldn’t you?
Not so fast! The following is the ‘happy go lucky McDonalds employee’ handing me my stone-cold egg McMuffin. My best advice if looking for breakfast while in China… go straight to lunch.
Cool new promo idea #4 is….
Puzzled by this? So was I… but after thinking it over, I know this could be huge.
There is a large movement in promo (and in life) to move away from digital ideas and towards more “analog” ideas. I see this where I live in the cafes that have a board game theme. In last year’s fidget spinner craze and in the trending ideas on social media that ask us all to “unplug.”
As we have a long history of doing custom shaped promos such as power banks, flash drives and others, the idea of making a custom shaped foam core puzzle in the shape of your clients product is very familiar.
Think of the idea below as a great example. (i.e.) The local Caterpillar dealer gets you to have us make one of their diggers done in a 3D puzzle complete with their logo on it. The end-user/recipient spends an hour “unplugged” making the puzzle and at the same time staring at the customers logo. Brilliant!
There is always that one weird idea that you find…
I really dig deep when I go to the shows and factories. I turn over every leaf and basket looking for new ideas to put your client’s logo on. This one was proudly displayed in the housewares section of the show. This makes me wonder what the rest of their house looks like?
I am also concerned on this one… where does the logo go?
More ideas to follow… stay tuned!
We have another 5 or so new ideas that I would love your opinion on. I will post these in the coming days. Thanks for your continued support and let me know how we can continue to be your best supplier!

We believe that only using ASI or PPAI search for your business is a bad idea.
We have been a supplier for 20 years and there are some secrets about ASI that most distributors don’t know. It is important to know so you can make more sales and make more money.
Here are a few key things you need to be aware of.
#1 – When you see ANY search result it is PAID to be placed there by the supplier
Suppliers pay on average 60K a year for product placement. A few years ago I bought half of 1 day a week’s banner. It cost $1500 PER DAY!
#2 – The average age of end users is 35 while the average ASI distributor age is 57
There is a disconnect in the age gap that is most apparent if Distributors ONLY use ASI and PPAI search.
As a supplier, every day I get inquiries from Distributors looking for “something their client found online!” The end user wants something unique and unusual. They don’t always want the same thing, again… and again. You need to look elsewhere!
#3 – If you only use ASI and PPAI search, what advantage do you have over your competitor?
It may seem obvious, but if you and the Distributor down the street get the same inquiry for the same general product what advantage do you have? Isn’t it then only down to price?
In the internet age, Distributors need an advantage to beat out their biggest competitor: the end user!
If you keep presenting the same old ideas as your competitor down the street you will continue to encourage the end user (remember they are 35 and web-savvy) to buy online and NOT from you.
“It’s time to think differently!”
What do YOU think?

Why are you paying so much for your custom socks? Stop it!
At Promo Motive, we LOVE to explore the promotional products marketplace searching for great ideas, especially ones where the prices are way too high!
We specialize in getting Distributors a better factory direct deal. This week we ask the following question: “Why are you paying too much for custom socks? Stop it!”
There are 2 kinds of custom socks… Sublimated and Knitted!
Some suppliers like to make their most expensive product seem mysterious… *ooooo* …but when it comes to socks, there are 2 simple ways to get your logo on them.
Sublimated is simply a blank sock that has the ink/image printed directly into and onto the sock. If you have a logo or image that is super colorful, has bleeds or fades from dark to light etc., you’ll want a sublimated sock. See examples below.
Knitted logo socks are simply a sock where the logo is actually created while the sock is being knitted. Knitted sock logos need the logo to be solid colors (i.e. no bleeds and fades, no photographic images). The logo and layout should be more of a repetitive pattern or relatively more simple design than the sublimated.
We make it simple… both sublimated and knitted socks are the same price. The sock sizes (except knee highs) are the same and prices include FREE shipping. Wow, that was easy.

The Top 5 reasons to get a logo on a folding straw
Last Straw is the folding reusable drinking straw sweeping the promotional products world. But why is it so popular?
It is always a bit of a head scratcher when something really takes off (i.e. fidget spinner) but at the heart of each trend there are reasons why it has taken off.
Reason #1 – The Turtle Video
The video below has been watched well over 40 million times. The scientists who found this turtle in distress noticed something stuck in it’s nose. Warning: contains disturbing images.
Reason #2 – Ban on Single Use Disposable Drinking Straws
Starbucks, McDonalds, Seattle, Vancouver and hundreds of countries and corporations and counting have decided to ban the single use disposable drinking straw.
Reason #3 – Emotional Appeal
More people will buy it than will use it. Yup, it’s one of those things that say “Hey… I want to help save the planet and here’s my proof!”
Reason #4 – Herd Mentality
I remember way back 18 months ago we were ahead of the curve on fidget spinners. I was telling people: “Keep this in your mind… people will want it!” They thought I was crazy… (we sold over 500,000 spinners in 4 months). Herd mentality had arrived.
Reason #5 – It’s the Right Thing to Do
Even if YOU do not think this is a good idea, a lot of people who have a finer tuned idea about the environment do think it is. In fact, another reusable straw company sold 80,000 units at $35 each. That’s proof enough.
